Children of the Mountains

I just finished watching "Children of the Mountains" on 20/20 tonight. Not many people know this about me, but the stories of the people in the Appalachian mountains really tug at my heart. I have never felt called to go to Africa or India or other countries overseas. Not that I wouldn't be open to that if God called me there, but I do feel a calling to help those that are so poverty stricken in Eastern Tennessee/Kentucky.

During my freshman year in high school, I was flipping through the channels late one night and the program "Feed the Children" came on. The host was in Eastern Kentucky describing the unbelievable poverty in that area. I was so moved that I called in and donated my allowance. I have never forgotten what I saw that night.

As I watched tonight, I prayed...God, send me. Whether it's my time or resources - I want to do more.

Below is the trailer for 'A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains.'

  1. Thank you for sharing this, Tara. I'll be praying that God will reveal to you exactly how He intends for you to use this burden on your heart for the people of Appalachia.

And let me know if you'd like some company on that path.

  2. Tara - I love that you wrote about this! Jeff and I watched that show too - and it broke our hearts. I would love to chat more with you about what is being done in that area. Lots of love <3

  3. Tara, first of all I love blogs and I am excited to find you have one! I might just out you on my blog roll.

Second, I watched that on 20/20 as well. I feel the same way about what is happening there. I also have never felt called to a foreign country, but I so want to do something for the people and children in the Appalachians.

I don't know what I could do, but I want to help. In fact, I have some friends in Lexington, KY and I already told them that I would like to visit eastern Kentucky and would like for them to be my "guides" in a sense.

I think we should chat about this further and see what we could come up with.
